Paint Diary July 6th

Today was a more successful day of painting.  The first thing I did was work back into the Ruffles bag ever so slightly.  Although I have been keen on painting as little detail as possible on these small panels from life this painting was lacking certain pops of detail that once painted in made a world of difference.  Specifically painting in the Nutrition Facts on the back of the bag that pokes through as well as some pops of red to break up all the green.

An oil painting representing a bag of Ruffles potato chips sits on an easel in front of the actual bag of chips.

That was a good start.  I immediately set to work on painting a small arrangement of two glass containers.  I painted glass recently for a small composition on shopoilpaintings.com but that aside I probably hadn’t painted glass in a year and I wanted to test my skills.  I was very focused and it went well all things considered.

I tried to be mindful of not overworking the brushwork and operating immense discretion when it came to each brush mark.  I was just looking at the photo of the painting - because I am also making YouTube edits of the process - and I was very pleased with how it photographed.  Anyway, enough me patting myself on the back for having painted today.

Actually, one more paint related note as far as today's time in the studio is concerned: for some time I have been wanting to devise some sort of place for all my unused pigment to land once done painting for the day.  Often it's the case that I wrap and have some amazing colors left on the palette that ultimately go to waste.  Today I gridded up a 12 x 16 in piece of Arches Oil Paper and will start to fill in the one inch squares with leftover pigment organized in a gradient from warm to cool color.  This will be fun and will ensure that no oil paint goes to waste.

What's more is that I still had some pigment left on the palette and I spontaneously applied that to another sheet of oil paper - sort of in the form of an imagined landscape - and really liked how that started to look too.  This week I will paint some larger landscapes from a place of sketch and imagination.  I cannot get over how beautiful these Fauvist landscapes are.  I will make some of my own paintings inspired by these works.  What I will really be experimenting with is sketching on location and then building paintings in the studio from those sketches.  I believe I spoke about this yesterday and I continue to sense unlimited possibilities all over the place here - I just need to implement.

On the topics of the Fauves I had had another idea for a fun, creative business that would essentially be Art History Shirts (although unfortunately this domain is already taken).  This idea was prompted by seeing someone recently with a one color Matisse shirt however I swear I have had this idea before, I’m just feeling very confident in the idea and the ability to execute.  My first idea for a series of shirts would be The Fauves and would include probably about three artists, each on their own shirt, and the design would feature their name, signature, a sketched outline of one of their paintings as well as some art history related facts about them.  These elements composed well will create an amazing shirt, at least for a narrow section of us art history nerds.

I think it could be nice to have a merch side of this website and to try and direct traffic to this site by way of the oil paintings but also advertise the shirts and send traffic to this same website for shirts.  These are all ideas I feel confident about ultimately.  Today’s entry will be a short one but there will be lots of exciting paintings to make this week as well as lots to write about subsequently.

Lastly - not because I am thirsty to manifest things - but I do have a sense that an opportunity will materialize this week.  I feel a genuine momentum amassing beneath my sails.
